On the Banks of the Ohio

about

A haunting murder ballad with a sweetness about it.

I recorded this single in contingency with my album release for 'Fare Thee Well: A Joan Baez.' I heard her version back in October of 2018 and I was so touched, I wanted to record my own rendition.

lyrics

Verse 1
I asked my love to take a walk
To take a walk, just a little walk
Down beside where the waters flow
Down by the banks of the Ohio

Chorus
And only say that you'll be mine
In no others' arms entwine
Down beside where the waters flow
Down by the banks of the Ohio

Verse 2
I held a knife against her breast
As into my arms she pressed
She cried "Oh, Willie! Don't you murder me
I'm not prepared for eternity"

Chorus

Verse 3
I wandered home between twelve and one
I cried, "Oh God, what have I done?!"
I've killed the only woman I loved
Because she would not be my bride

Chorus
