Album Liner Notes:

Background

In 2019, Joan Baez celebrated 60 years in music by going on a farewell tour, which she called her “Fare Thee Well” tour. In October of 2020, it will be 60 years since the release of her debut self-titled album under Vanguard Records. Nina thought it was appropriate to tribute Joan’s history in music with an album based on her first official release, Joan Baez.

'Fare Thee Well: A Joan Baez Tribute' contains Nina's renditions of the 13 original cuts from Joan Baez in the original album order, with one additional tribute song written by Nina called, “Club 47/Fare Thee Well, Joan.”

Recording the Album
Fare Thee Well: A Joan Baez Tribute was recorded in Sarasota, FL at Jump Dog Audio Productions. It was mixed and mastered by Mark Dann of Woodstock, NY.

All of the songs were performed in simple fashion, with acoustic guitar and vocals by Nina Ricci. Production credit goes to Teresa Hunt Ricci.

Cover Art
The portrait images of Nina on the front, inside, and back covers were taken by Teresa Hunt Ricci of Get Noticed Music Photography.

The concert photo on the front cover is an artistic rendering of the iconic photograph taken by Stephen H. Fenerjian of Joan Baez performing at the Club 47 in 1959.

This photo was the catalyst for Nina's inspiration behind the first half of her original tribute song: "Club 47/Fare Thee Well, Joan."

Special Thanks
I want to express my appreciation to each person who came out of pocket to support my efforts to make Fare Thee Well: A Joan Baez Tribute come to life. Some of you did it out of sincere love for me and my family, some have been following my career and wanted to see me achieve another goal, and others are huge Joan Baez fans who wanted to support a project that honors her. The kindness of friends and strangers made this album.
We did it together with love!

Note to Joan

Dear Joan,

Through your recordings, you became my teacher and I became your student. In my bedroom training grounds, I learned from your interpretations of folk songs. I laughed and cried and soared along with you, and in some ways, I think your qualities rubbed off on me. I surely polished myself by your whetstone. I sang your songs like I was riding with training wheels, and eventually, I was able to start riding the bike independently, interpreting songs for myself.

To me, you were every character you sang about, every fair maiden, every rake and rambler. You have been my folklore hero. I hope I can be that for someone out there, too.

I hope you’ll see yourself in the tribute song I wrote to you,
“Club 47/Fare Thee Well, Joan,“ the way I see you.

Sincerely, a true admirer,
Nina Ricci
