about

I heard this track from Joan Baez's 'Folksingers 'Round Harvard Square' album, and subsequently listened to Odetta's version, as well. It struck me on the first listen, and I thought immediately that I had to record it. It was so pitifully sad and beautiful. I recorded "Lowlands" in one take.

One might assume this is an American song, because of famous names who recorded it, but rather it is set in the Scottish lowlands.

lyrics

Lowlands

VERSE 1
Lowlands, lowlands, away my John
My old mother wrote to me
'Bout a dollar and a half a day
She told a me to come home from sea
(Short interlude: just 4 bars of intro)

VERSE 2
Lowlands, lowlands, away my John
Five dollars a day is white man's pay
My dollar and a half a day
Dollar a day is black man's pay
(Longer interlude: intro with chords to “dollar and a half a day”)

VERSE 3
Lowlands, lowlands, away my John
Had a dream the other night
My dollar and a half a day
Dreamed I was comin' home from sea

VERSE 4
Lowlands, lowlands, away my John
My old mother wrote to me
'Bout a dollar and a half a day
She told a me to come home from sea
